August 1 Sermon:  It Takes Two
Scripture:  Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12
Sermon by Assistant Pastor Rev. Porter

It takes two to make a couple, a relationship, a community you and another entity.  Verse 9 provides the rationale that two is better than one.  More can be accomplished.  Its not good to be alone.  People were created not to live solitary and secluded lives.  With more than one, you have unity, power and strength.  We do not want people to get in our business; we want to get all the accolades by ourselves.  We need people to come together in our communities and churches.  The Bible teaches us to love one another and pray for one another.  It is not good for man to be alone.  Look at Adam.  After God created him, He looked at him and said its not good for him to be alone and God created Eve.  Why do some people think they can have church at home by themselves?  They stay at home and watch T.D. on the TV.  But God said where two or three come together in my name.
There are benefits of coming together:
(1) Verse 10 King Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, gave the scenario of a traveler traveling alone.  If he falls, theres no one there to pick him up.  Many times if we fall when we are alone, we just lay there and wallow in our misery.  We need someone to help us, give us an encouraging word, and tell us we are going in the wrong direction.
(2) Verse 11 King Solomon continues with if two lie together, they have heat, but how can one be warm alone.  Take a match, it is useless by itself.  The matchbox is also useless by itself.  They must come together to catch on fire to cause heat.  Thats what we need in this community to come together in love and unity.  Thats what we need in this church some fire, some warmth, to come together.
(3) Verse 12 if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.  King Solomon is trying to say if you are traveling all alone and the enemy attacks, you have no one to help you.  If there are the community, the church, you and a third party, you are not easily broken.  That third party is Jesus.
You have other people concerned about you that want to help you out.  But remember, you
have Jesus.
Satan is like in the game Red Rover.  Hes trying to break through.  But we need to be strong and band together to ward off the evils of the devil.
