October 3 Mission Lesson: The Ten Commandments
Scripture: Exodus 20: 1-17
The Ten Commandments were given to show us how to relate to God and to one another. The first four commandments show us how we are to relate to God. The final six commandments focus on how we are to honor respect, and treat each other as human beings.
In the first four commandments, God introduces Himself as the One who freed us from bondage. He instructs us to recognize Him as the Father of freedom and promises a better life if we follow Him. In order to receive all that the Father has to give us, we must promise not to worship any other gods or images.
Exodus is the story of God giving birth to a nation. Through Gods labor a nation emerged from slavery into freedom. First came freedom, then the commandments and instructions to teach us how to live godly lives. How can we not honor and give praise to the One who set us free from slavery and promises us the beauty of His kingdom with everlasting life? Even today, Gods power lives, and His presence is as strong as it was when He freed the Israelites from captivity.
