October 24 Sermon: How to Hold On When You Feel Like Giving Up
Posted on Thu, Oct 28, 2004
Sermon Sunday, October 24: How to Hold On When You Feel Like Giving Up
Scripture: Jeremiah 32:17
Sermon delivered by guest Rev. Barnes
Rev. Barnes started his sermon quoting Charles Dickens It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom........
2004 is the best of times, technology is growing by leaps and bounds. But on the other hand it is the worst of times. There are 3 million people that lost their jobs last year. I wonder if any of them feel like giving up. These people were told 17-18 years ago to go to school and get an education so you can get a good job. But now you cant get a job to feed your family.
We are in an age of unbelief. People raised in the church, learning about the Lord all their life, grow up and say I dont know if I believe in God or not. We have no reason to be over in Irag, but we are there. Our young men and women are losing their lives. We may be in the light over here but they are in the darkness over there.
We are in an age of despair. Senior citizens are trying to decide whether to buy prescriptions or food. Job quoted despair. He knew what it was to lose hope, look in the future and not see light but darkness. Job was written a long time ago, but if you want to be truthful, you can change Jobs name to your name. Temptation sets in when things are going bad, when theres no peace for the perturbed, when theres no salvation for the lost. Some of you are facing it right now but you are hiding it. There is an area in your life regardless of what God or the Bible says, you feel like giving up. How do you find the power to keep going on?
(1) Trust in Gods sovereignty. God has a purpose for you in your life and it
doesnt include giving up. Jesus is the author and finisher of my faith.
(2) Trust in Gods power. The scripture this morning tells us that nothing is too
hard for God. He can speak it into your life. God specializes in situations.
(3) Place your hope in Christ. Whether God chooses to change your
circumstances or not, our true hope is in Jesus Christ.
If you have the Lord, you have hope, joy and peace. If you lose hope, you lose everything.
