Marriage
 
Marriage Defined:  Marriage is a relationship between man and woman intended by God to be a monogamous relationship intended to be a permanent bond in which many needs are satisfied � the need to love and be loved, the need for deep friendship, for sharing, for companionship, for sexual satisfaction, for children, the need to escape loneliness.
 
The biblical standard for marriage is a monogamous relationship in which a man and a woman share a lifetime commitment to each other, second only to their commitment to God.  It is an unconditional, lifetime commitment
 
Read Genesis 2:18-25
a. Who originated marriage?
b. For what purpose was marriage instituted?
 1. Procreation � Genesis 1:28
 2. Companionship � Genesis 2:18
 3. Divine Illustration � Ephesians 5: 22-32
 
Marriage is a covenant.  Malachi 2:13-14
a. Covenant (permanent binding agreement with God) not contract
b. Marriage is a legal relationship established by God
c. The marriage covenant functions under authority.  1 Corinthians 11:3
d. The marriage covenant is permanent.  Matthew 19: 6
 
Read Ephesians 5: 21-38
a. What is God�s desire for husbands? (Verse 25)
b. In what ways can a husband fulfill God�s desire for him?
c. What is God�s desire for wives? Verse 22
d. In what ways can a wife fulfill God�s desire for him?
 
Read 2 Corinthians 6: 14-15
a. What principle does God set forth in this passage?
b. How does this apply to a Christian marriage?
 
Christians married to non-believers. I Corinthians 7:10-16; 1 Peter 3:1-5
Live life as an example that you might lead that person to Christ.
 
Divorce
1. God hates divorce.  Malachi 2:16; Matthew 19:8
2. Death. I Corinthians 7:39
3. Sexual Sin. Matthew 19:1-15
