December 12 Mission Lesson: The Necessity of Prayer
Scripture: Matthew 6:5-15; Luke 18:1-14
Prayer is fundamental to our faith in God. It acknowledges our dependency on God and not on ourselves. There are both proper and improper prayers, and God makes the distinction clear. Among them are instructions not to be hypocritical in our praying. Those who seek to impress others with perfect words or for prominence will only achieve the prominence.
God prefers our prayers take place in secret, behind closed doors in our prayer closets. When we pray to God in private, we draw closer to Him. He will always hear and answer when we pray according to His will. He listens for the sincere prayers of the heart, not empty words.
Even though the Father already knows our needs, by praying to Him we acknowledge those needs and our dependency on the Father to meet them. Sometimes Hes waiting to hear from us reverently in prayer before supplying those needs. And just as the Father knows our needs, He also knows our sins. Through prayer we have the opportunity to seek forgiveness and redemption. Through prayer God sees the condition of our hearts. He reveals Himself to us as we fellowship with Him. He desires that we seek His counsel for all things.
