November 27, 2005 Sermon: The Tongue Is It Productive or Is It Destructive?
Scripture:  James 3: 3-12
Sermon delivered by Pastor Williams

How are you using your tongue?  Are you using it to lift up the name of Jesus?  Or are you using it to tear down Gods kingdom?

Many of us think we can use our tongue to say whatever we want to say, whenever we want to say it.  As soon as church is over, we curse each other out in the church parking lot.  There is power in the tongue.  What you say can help or hurt.  Many people dont come to church because of what somebody here at New Hope has said.  Dont you know that the world was formed by words?  God said let there be light and light appeared.  All Im trying to say is there is power in words.

James teaches us practical living as a Christian; he teaches faith comes with works; he teaches faith without works id dead; he teaches issues of the tongue.  Dont worry about my tongue, worry about controlling your tongue.  When you use profanity, you are being destructive.  When we gossip, we are being destructive.

There are four things you need to remember
  1. If what you are about to tell is a lie, you are getting ready to gossip
  2. If you heard it and knew it was a lie, you are getting ready to gossip
  3. If you are getting ready to tell something that is not necessary, you are getting ready to gossip
  4. If you are abut to tell something you do not have permission to tell, you are getting ready to gossip

When your heart is pure, the only reason you tell it is you want to mess up somebodys name.  If you are a Christian, you should have a productive tongue, lift up Jesus.  Let good words flow from your mouth.  Many of us use our tongues to tar down Gods church.  Somebody came in with a depressed spirit, with their heads hung down.  All they needed was a kind word from you.  You might not have any money, but you can say God bless you.  God is not impressed with you cutting people down.
