October 10 Sermon: Jesus, The Thirst Quencher
Scripture: John 4:4-18
Sermon delivered by Pastor Williams
This woman at Jacobs well was thirsty, her lips were parched, the desert had dried up her spirit. As I look at the state of man, many of us are thirsty. We are tired, beaten down, worn down and looking for something to quench our thirst. We have some sort of need in our lives, thirsty for someone to say I love you, thirsty for someone to put their arms around us, thirst to be accepted. We are looking for love in all the wrong places. We just want a little peace, we just want to find a place to find some peace and quiet. Let me tell you, you are in the right place and at the right time this morning. There is a man standing there knocking, that man is Jesus. There is an importance in drinking water. Many of us would rather drink Kool-Aid or lemonade to quench our thirst instead of just getting a glass of free water. Thats like the world that want all those colored and flavorful things rather than just plain clear free living water.
This woman was a Samaritan, Jesus was a Jew. The Syrians and Jews co-mingled and produced the Samaritans. When these co-mingled people returned, the Jews resented them so much that they had separate worship services. You cant have your thirst quenched with hatred in your heart if you dont learn how to love your brothers and sisters. Many of us are caught up in religion. You can tell them because they are looking and gauging others by what the preacher said on Sunday. They show up every Sunday but their lives have not changed.
This woman never had her thirst quenched because she lived her life without restraint. She had five husbands and the one she was shacking with the one she had now and he wasnt hers. She was a religious person, she forgot that committing adultery was a sin.
There comes a time when we love the Lord what we have to learn to love everybody. We all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God. Because we live our lives without restraint, we come in empty and leave empty.
Come to the well, Jesus is sitting there, if you drink of His well, you will never thirst again. He will restore you. He will renew you. What are you drinking? Tea will run out, lemonade will run out. When you get weary, drink some Jesus. When they talk about you, drink some Jesus. His water will quench your thirst and will never run out.
