April 18:  The Blessed Ones:  The Poor in Spirit

            Luke 6:20; Matthew 5:3

The poor in spirit are often ridiculed and called weak.  Yet Jesus assures them that they are divinely blessed and inheritors of the kingdom of God.  The poor in spirit are those who acknowledge their helplessness and rely on God’s grace to see them through.

In Luke 6:20, Jesus speaks to His disciples and says, “Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God”.  He was not speaking of people who are poor because of laziness, sickness, or reasons beyond their control.  Jesus was speaking to followers who chose to be poor in order to share the Gospel with others.

God desires us to be grateful for that which He has blessed us with on earth.  We are to seek the riches of His kingdom in heaven and not the riches of the world.  To whom much has been given, much is required.  We must acquaint this passage with our knowledge of the Word of God.  But would this not be true of all things?  God will not neglect the sick and poor.  He wants His children, whom He has already richly blessed, to be blessings to those less fortunate.
